Undergraduate Teaching Materials for Flood Risk Management

Background:  In their report Action on Engineering Skills Shortages in Flood Risk Management, the Environment Agency (EA), the Department of the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and the Institute of Civil Engineers recommended that case study materials and models should be produced to help develop degree course content and improve the relevance of courses to the real world of civil engineering.

Teaching materials are presented on this site, and can be downloaded and adapted for academic use (see Llcence (pdf format; Licence (word format).

Contents:

Introduction to Flooding - provides background to flooding issues, including recent events, flood defence and the role of the Environment Agency.

Case Study: River Kelvin - uses steady flow HEC-RAS modelling to assess flood risk to Kirkintilloch.  Includes slides on theoretical background, handout and HEC-RAS models.

Case Study: Hebden Bridge - considers the contribution of overland flow processes to flood risk in Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire.  Includes some questions for students.

Case Study:  Minehead - uses steady flow HEC-RAS modelling to build a rating curve at the site of a proposed flow gauge.  includes HEC-RAS model.

Case Study: Test and Itchen CFMP - looks into sustainable flood risk management and catchment flood management plans, with some questions for students.

Case Study:  Uckfield - discusses options from the flood management plan and the 2000 event - click the following link:  http://www.geography.org.uk/resources/flooding/uckfield/landuse

Case Study: Boscastle - discusses global flooding issues and hydraulics of flood flow using the Boscastle flood of 2004 as an example.
